Hamilton Bailey: A Surgeon's Life
Published in Hardcover by Greenwich Medical Media (01 March, 1999)
Author: Adrian Marston
Average review score:

biography of a mesmerizing figure....
How can you imagine that a surgeon, who was born more than a hundred years ago, managed to have his name preserved in surgical textbooks still bearing his name nowadays? "Hamilton Bailey " is such a legendary name. Bailey never had the manual dexterity required for a surgeon. Early in his career, he got abscess of the hand which led to the amputation of his left index finger (as was the treatment in the pre-antibiotic era). He was poor at socialising and he was never welcome by patients and colleagues. He even had intractable manic-depressive illness and had a close shave from leucotomy. The secret of his tremendous productivity in textbook writing must be indebted, at least in part, to his wife Veta. This book is very enjoyable to read ... the only difficulty for me is to overcome the tons of unfamiliar names and places!

Handbook on the Pentateuch: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy
Published in Hardcover by Baker Book House (August, 1982)
Author: Victor P. Hamilton
Average review score:

Fun, imformative, and erudite...
Hamilton's synopsis of the Penteteuch is great for the biblical scholar at heart. Laypersons will also enjoy this book, as it flows quite well and keeps the reader intrigued. Hamilton's analysis of the hexameron (the work of the six creative periods) is especially fascinating, as he pulls parallels from mythological cosmogony to demonstrate that the biblical account of the hexameron is unique in many respects, but that the underlying motif is not new to other cultures outside of the Bible. Also, this book doesn't carry an ostentatious Evangelical flavor to it; it is very objective and can be enjoyed by those from all faiths.

The only real complaint I would have about the book is its format. Hamilton's approach is thematic. This reader prefers verse-by-verse commentary, so the commentary suffers a little bit, in that Hamilton skipped over some of the nuances in the penteteuch which contribute to its overall account. However, I recommend the book for all those interested in a deeper look at the first 5 books of the Bible.

Hellbent for Enlightenment: Unmasking Sex, Power, and Death With a Notorious Master
Published in Paperback by White Cloud Press (June, 1998)
Authors: Rosemary Hamilton and Rosemary Lansdowne
Average review score:

Important contribution to the literature of the movement.
I found the book fascinating, and appreciated the personal revelations Ms. Hamilton shares. I believe the book is invaluable to those seeking an insight into the attraction of these kinds of movements in general, and the Rajneesh movement in particular. I believe that Ms. Hamilton does take an apologist's tone regarding the Bhagwan's involvement or knowledge of the violent attacks on surrounding communities. Ms. Hamilton suggests that Ma Sheela and her security force were solely responsible for the attacks without the knowledge of surrounding community members or the Bhagwan. I believe that her idealization of the Bhagwan continues to affect her analysis, and causes her to cast the members of the movement as victims of an individual. I grew up in a small town, and know that secrets simply cannot be kept. BUT people can always refuse to look...

Home and Away: Chartwell Collection
Published in Paperback by Art Books Intl Ltd (January, 2000)
Author: William McAloon
Average review score:

First-rate publication about a first-rate collection.
"Home and Away" accompanies an exhibition of artworks from the Chartwell collection, held in Auckland, New Zealand 1999. The collection contains major pieces of contemporary Australian and New Zealand art, and while there is nothing groundbreaking in this particular exhibition of the works, the publication is refreshingly straightforward. McAloon groups the works classically under 3 thematic headings - signs/place/indigenity, abstraction/expression/transcendence, and abstraction/material/signs. While these are not new themes, the publication concisely highlights significant issues in the recent history of Australasian art. The text is informative, yet very readable and the reproductions of the works are simply luscious! A highly enjoyable book.
